SCALE Formula for Partnership Marketing: A Guide for Business Owners

The SCALE formula for partnership marketing

When it comes to scaling your business, partnership marketing can be the secret weapon you didn’t know you needed. The SCALE formula is the Inflektion structured approach to help you find the right partners, connect with your ideal audience, and optimize your results. Whether you’re new to the concept or want to improve your current strategy, this guide offers clear, actionable advice to help you scale your business effectively.

What is the SCALE Formula?

SCALE stands for:

  • Solve for Gaps
  • Customize the Marketing Funnel
  • Audience Alignment & Engagement
  • Leverage in Negotiations
  • Exclusivity

These steps work together to create impactful, mutually beneficial partnerships that drive bottom-line results. Below, we’ll break down each step in detail, explain why it matters, and give you tips you can start applying today.

1. Solve for Gaps

Every buyer’s journey has weak points. The first step in the SCALE framework is to identify the gaps in your sales funnel and find partners who can help fill them.

Ask Yourself:

  • Where are potential customers dropping off in their buyer’s journey?
  • Which partners can help fill these gaps?

How to Identify These Gaps:

  1. Map Your Funnel: Track the customer’s buying process. Where do they lose interest or abandon their purchase?
  2. Conduct Surveys: Use customer feedback to pinpoint problem areas. Ask questions like:
      • “What concerns did you have before buying?”
      • “What almost made you not purchase?”
  1. Spy on Competitors: Look at competitors in a similar space to see who they’re partnering with and analyze their success.

Actionable Tips:

  • Use survey tools like Typeform or Google Forms to collect and analyze customer feedback.
  • Experiment with sending an email directly to undecided leads (e.g., “What’s holding you back from purchasing?”) and incentivizing responses with a giveaway.

By solving these gaps, you can identify the right types of partners who will elevate your buyer’s experience and help boost conversions.

2. Customize the Marketing Funnel

One-size-fits-all marketing doesn’t cut it anymore. To truly resonate with your partner’s audience, you need a personalized approach.

Why This Matters:

Each partner’s audience is unique. By tailoring your messaging and offers to their interests, you’ll see better engagement and higher conversions.

How to Customize:

  • Use the “Jobs to Be Done” framework to understand the deeper reasons why your customers buy.
    • Check out these videos on YouTube to learn how it works (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ork0d7XNmB0, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ox1cfE2SOo).
  • Read reviews to identify patterns in what customers value.
  • Conduct more surveys with questions like:
    • “What problem were you hoping to solve with our product?”
    • “If you could change one thing about our product, what would it be?”

Example:

For a partner in the wellness space, emphasize how your product enhances well-being with imagery and language that complements their brand tone.
Pro tip: Test your customized funnels with a small subset of the audience before launching to a broader base.

3. Audience Alignment & Engagement

A partnership is only as good as the alignment between your audiences. To find the ideal partner, focus on audience overlap and engagement.

Key Considerations:

  • Audience Fit: Does their audience resemble your ideal customer profile?
  • Engagement Levels: Are their followers actually engaged, or is the audience burned out with constant promotions?

How to Evaluate Audience Alignment:

  • Social Media Analysis:
    • Use tools like Upfluence to analyze the authenticity of followers and engagement rates.
  • Email Lists:
    • Sign up for your potential partner’s mailing list and observe content for 2-3 weeks to understand their tone and audience interest.
  • Podcasts:
    • Instead of asking about lifetime downloads, inquire about the average downloads in the first 30 days of an episode. Compare that to their follower reviews on Apple or Spotify.

You want to prioritize partners whose audience feels a strong affinity for them; this trust will transfer to your brand when they recommend your product.

4. Leverage in Negotiations

Not all partners are created equal, and the same goes for the value they bring. To achieve bottom-line profitability, you need smart negotiation strategies.

Tips for Evaluating Partner Performance:

  1. Conduct a Post-purchase Survey:
      • Ask customers how they first heard about your brand with specific follow-ups (e.g., “Which podcast referred you?”).
      • Use tools like Hotjar or Shopify plugins like KNO for easy survey integration.
  1. Use Attribution Data:
      • Implement an MTA platform like Rockerbox or TripleWhale to analyze each channel’s contribution to sales and measure which partner efforts deliver the best ROI.

Negotiation Tactics:

  • Flat Rate + Performance:
    • Pay a baseline amount plus additional commission for performance.
  • Performance with a Minimum Guarantee:
    • Guarantee a minimum payout and agree on “make good” campaigns if results fall short.
  • Exclusive Offers:
    • Provide your partner with an offer their audience can’t get anywhere else, creating FOMO (fear of missing out) for their followers.

Your goal is to ensure fair deals that deliver maximum value for both you and your partners.

5. Exclusivity

Everyone loves to feel special, and offering exclusivity can create a huge appeal for both your partners and their audience.

How to Use Exclusivity:

  • Offer an exclusive discount or tiered pricing that’s only available through select partners.
  • Add value with a low-cost, high-perceived-value incentive. For example, include a complementary product from another brand (e.g., pair massage oils with gourmet chocolate).

Positioning your brand as an “exclusive offer” drives urgency and entices both the partner and their audience to act quickly.

Pro Tip:

And as a bonus, you can make your partners feel valued by offering them creative assets, swipe copy, and quick approval timelines to make their campaigns as effortless as possible.

E3 Partnership Checklist

The checklist below uses our E framework to keep your partners better engaged.

Effortless

  • Providing effective creative assets (aka swipe copy) that have been tested.
  • Plan long in advance. Now is the time to plan for BFCM.
  • Sharing winning campaigns concepts that other successful partners have done. Note it’s important to not share the exact campaign details, as some partners may view this as giving away their proprietary processes. High level overviews are great though.
  • Have responsive support
  • Ensure they have an easy signup process without many hurdles
  • Approve your partner applications quickly
  • Ensure they get sample product (a.k.a. product seeding) quickly
  • Offering multiple payout methods
  • Make sure they get paid on time

Enriching

  • Improving your funnel conversion rates by investing in CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization)
  • Having a customized funnel for their audience’s interests
  • Creating contests that reward your largest partners with cash or other cool prizes (e.g. trips)
  • Creating a bonus program where upon hitting certain thresholds, the partner will receive an additional payout
  • Making sure the partner has the best promotion available (the only exception would be periods of potentially high site-wide discounts like Black Friday Cyber Monday)
  • Providing the partner with experts that can help them build compelling content (training the partner, being a podcast guest, joining them on a Reel). Many successful partnerships revolve around content production, so by having experts on hand it’s easier for you to help them make content.
  • Make sure your attribution and tracking is rock solid. Work with your tech team to make sure that Apple’s ITP is not an issue. Do cross device attribution using email addresses. Yes, if you’re paying on a performance basis that means more commission payouts, but in the long run happier partnerships will outweigh that cost.
  • Have a generous attribution / cookie window based on how long it typically takes for your customers to convert.
  • Have generous commissions that accurately represent how valuable partners are to you. Don’t be one of those companies that pays out 10% commissions to your affiliates, yet is willing to pay 30% to Meta Ads for sales of equal quality.
  • Create commission structures that create incentives to scale. Whether your partner does 10 sales or 1000 sales requires similar levels of effort to outreach and onboarding, so if they turn out to be a big partner, reward them with higher commission rates.
  • Make sure to involve your partners in any sales. The most effective sales we’ve found are price increase sales.
  • Before your next price increase (which should happen at least every couple of years), throw a big sale at your old prices. Make sure all your partners know long in advance so they can communicate this with their audiences to take advantage of the old prices.
  • Invest in retargeting ads and email marketing to support your partners (just make sure you’re not overinvesting, based on your commission structure).

Enjoyable

  • Provide your partners with special friends and family pricing (if not free product)
  • Create early bird access to opportunities for them and their followers
  • Randomly send them free product as a surprise
  • Create a partner newsletter and communicate with them regularly
  • Create an IRL event for your top affiliate partners
  • Do cross collaborations and feature them on your outbound communications
  • Let them participate in product development
  • And then of course, everything that’s Relationship Building 101
